Sam Miller for ForestsSubmitted by Susan Miller on Mon, 02/12/2007 - 09:41.
The Joyce Foundation has given a $5 million grant to begin cleanup of the Maumee River. Toady's article in the PD begins What happens in Northwest Ohio doesn't stay in Northwest Ohio. One of the things that will happen as part of this effort to reduce run off from agricultural land in Northwest Ohio is the planting of trees. “Working with farmers to plant trees and vegetation along the Tiffin and Blanchard rivers to restore wetlands and create a continuous buffer; and to test new drainage ditches to reduce sediment." This article extols the opportunities for industrial Northwest Ohio. But at one time this area was home to the Black Swamp.

Bottled Mahoning River water, anyone?Submitted by Susan Miller on Tue, 02/06/2007 - 10:51.
Maybe we should see if we could make a buck (or more likely a statement) selling Cuyahoga River cocktails or Lake Erie highballs. If the idea is that enough alcohol will eliminate the need to address our water quality issues, then the folks who have the money to address these issues ought to be happy to swill away on these high powered drinks. Add enough absinthe and sugar to some Cuyahoga River water and you've got a drink that we might call the Ohio Obliterator. Drink this and forget the Clean Water Act ever happened...

dancer of the daySubmitted by Susan Miller on Sat, 12/30/2006 - 11:44.
My hero, the man whose ideas expanded my own is interviewed here about his life and work. I had the opportunity to work with one of his very first dancers, Albert Reid when I was a 15 year old bunhead at a summer ballet school in Saratoga, NY. Needless to say, it changed my life and the course of my life’s work and world view. So now that I have ended my career as artistic director of a modern dance repertory company here in Northeast Ohio, I, like Merce, am still dancing and still seeing dance even though I may not be entering theaters to do so as often as before. Now for example I head out for the dance of dog walking. Today, the lighting design is especially brilliant. ( categories: )

dance video of the day from FranceSubmitted by Susan Miller on Thu, 09/14/2006 - 10:58.
You think SAFMOD’s cool? Check out this guy who actually pays homage to the master of multimedia dance construction. Uh, that would be the late Alwin Nikolais who pioneered this stuff when he returned from serving in WWII.
