On Thursday April 13 Ed Hauser, with support from the Gilotta family, made a presentation before the Cleveland Landmarks Commission, nominating the old Broadway Mills building, now homebase to Gilotta Fuels, for landmark status.  Hauser nominated both the building, built in 1894, and the remaining portion of the old central viaduct at the building’s base.  Motivated by a communication from ODOT, sent at 5:33p.m. on the evening before the hearing, a majority of  Landmark Commission members voted to table the nomination until ODOT could make a presentation at the Commission’s next meeting. That’s right, the Commission that is supposed to protect Cleveland’s landmarks decided not to even begin consideration of potential landmark status because of ODOT’s request.

The Cleveland Council on World Affairs and the U.S. State Department are sponsoring a visit to NE Ohio by an international delegation of resource-managers, policy and decision-makers, business people, and journalists from around the world, all with interests and expertise in environmental issues. On Friday, April 28, the delegation will come to Cleveland State for a luncheon, presentations, and panel discussion focusing on linking local environmental initiatives to the global challenges of environmental sustainability and protection. Cleveland State University faculty and distinguished guest panelists will present information about regional approaches to environmental issues, followed by a panel discussion intended to promote exchange of ideas and collaborative links with our international guests.

For so many reasons, University Circle and its institutions and the surrounding neighborhood are core to what I value in NEO, and I look forward to seeing all that continually expand in significance to me, the region and world. But, University Circle is a small geographic domain, which must be optimized for 21 organizational stakeholders, and their 1,000,000s of stakeholders, including everyone associated with Case, University Hospitals, the VA, CIA, Cleveland Museum(s), Institute of Music, Orchestra, etc., and all others in the community.

In visioning for a better region and future here, consider a broader interpretation of University Circle from the small cultural, healthcare and university center of Cleveland to the center of the entire University Community of NEO.

Please keep everyone injured in your hearts and prayers.  Let us learn from our mistakes....and keep in mind it could have been worse.  The river could have caught on fire.

The Board of Trustees of Case Western Reserve University announced today that it has elected Dr. Gregory L. Eastwood, MED '66, to become Interim President of the University effective June 2, 2006. Eastwood has been President of SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York since January 1993. "As an alum and member of the Board of Trustees of Case Western Reserve University, I am eager to assist the University during this transition period. I look forward to working with the faculty, students, staff, our alumni, and the Cleveland community" Eastwood said.

Northeast Ohio is about to see an explosive, high profile, living, learning and enlightening force hit the scene and landscape, as area filmmakers, learning institutions and the public come together to create NEO Central - a bleeding-edge collaborative media arts center for NEO now and the future.The center will be based on like-minded initiatives around the world, and will provide shared film/media education, incubation, production, distribution, business and technology resources, and facilities, which are currently located in the historic landmark Gillota Building at 300 Central Viaduct (Carnegie) and will be expanded significantly as part of an area economic development plan. A series of important events, held at the City Club on 05.04.2006, brought to the attention of 100s of community leaders the realities of the "silent epidemic" of lead poisoning in America and NEO today. The highlight was Dr. Lanphear's presentation of important research findings surfacing such shocking insight as:

the average I.Q.s of American adults (and you reading this) were most certainly diminished from past lead exposure (especially if you lived in the days of leaded gas)... average I.Q in America is going up, as we eradicate lead 1,000s of NEO children are exposed to hazardous levels of lead in their daily lives today Low income people are most adversely impacted but children in all socio-economic classes are poisoned Often affluent homeowners poison their own families by renovating while living at home, or not properly cleaning after renovations Children pay for lead exposure through diminished productivity throughout life - in very high doses, victims lose their lives (there was a case of this in the past few weeks). Over the past century, American society and government have not addressed lead  effectively, so Americans and our society today must accept responsibilty for the diminished capacities of untold 100,000s of victims and we must pay a $multi-biillion cost for remediation, as well as suffer lead-poison related societal problems like high crime and failing education systems, to say the least. Most tragic, the overall problem was largely avoidable (Europe outlawed lead in the early 1900s), and most individual cases of lead poisoning today are avoidable. Greater Cleveland has a higher percentage of elevated blood level children than the national average, and many neighborhoods have significant lead poison problems. This book shares insight generated in the effort to eradicate lead poisoning in NEO, including initiative of the Greater Cleveland Lead Advisory Council... GCLAC.

The EPA will rule by June 12th on whether diesel fuel is a hazardous air pollutant. On that day, check the price at the pump. Hopefully, that pump will be a biodiesel blend like E.55th and Payne.
